OTHER ACTIVITIES

Field Trips will be scheduled throughout the year. Some possible field trips that we could take may include: Beus Park, Capitol Theatre-Concert, The Tree House, Peery's Eqyptian Theater-Wizard of Oz Play/Storytelling Festival, Nature Center, Planetarium, Dinosaur Park, Zoo, etc.

I also reward the students with special parties for their hard work throughout the year to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Easter.

One very special event that we participate in every year is St. Paul School's wonderful Christmas Program at Christmastime.

In May, the students participate in an annual "Field Day" in Salt Lake City.

We also celebrate everyone's birthday in the classroom with special treats and the students share their "All About Me" poster with the class. All of the students who have a summer birthday get to pick out a special day in May to celebrate with the class.

Welcome to 1st grade! I am really excited to be your child's teacher this school year! First grade is your child's first experience attending school all day and I know the children are excited too. We are anxious to know everyone and work with you to make this year a fun and positive experience for your child.

SOMETHING ABOUT ME
I grew up as the daughter of a dairy farmer in Southeastern, Minnesota. I have also lived in the states of Wisconsin, Texas, and Kentucky. My husband, Jim, was in the U.S. Air Force when I married him. We have lived in several states including Maryland, Texas, and Utah. Our last duty station was right here at Hill Air Force Base where my husband retired after 21 years of service. We both love it here in beautiful Utah with our four children and enjoy the area very much!

I received my Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, WI and my Master's Degree from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY.

TO MAKE THIS YEAR SUCCESSFUL

Good attendance and prompt arrivals each morning are necessary to ensure a quality education for your child. A copy of our classroom schedule will be sent home with your child within the next two weeks Also, please label EVERYTHING that you send in with your child. The first two weeks we will be familiarizing the children with the schedule, rules and procedures of the classroom. I also want the children to get to know one another. Eating a good breakfast, getting plenty of sleep, and having positive feedback from parents and the teacher will help make the transition to a full day of school much easier. I encourage parent participation and involvement. I am exited to be part of this special time in your child's life. With your help and support, we can make it a great year for everyone.

CLASS RULES:

  1. Raise your hand if you need help or want permission to speak
  2. Listen carefully, follow directions, and work quietly
  3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself
  4. Stay together until everyone is done with their work
  5. Respect self, each other, and the teacher
  6. Respect school property, classroom, and environment

FIELD TRIPS/CELEBRATION
Field trips will be scheduled throughout the year. Some possible field trips that will be tied in with our themes are Beus Park, Nature Center, corn maze, Dinosaur Park, Tree house, and a play. I encourage parent involvement and participation. The children weekly enjoy parents visiting our classroom and going on the field trips. I also reward the children for their hard work with a few parties throughout the year such as a Thanksgiving feast, Christmas party, Valentines and Easter party and 100th day celebration.

SNACKS
I will assign each child a week for snacks. Please bring in enough snacks for the entire week. Some examples may be cookies, crackers, pretzels, fruit, vegetables, possible, etc. If you would like to bring in any special treat during the week or have the children prepare the treat, please let me know in advance. When drinks are brought in, please bring individual drink packages as it is difficult for the children to pour the juice from the large bottles.

STAR OF THE WEEK
Every child throughout the year will be selected to be the "Star of the Week" during the week of his/her birthday. This will be a parent and child's activity. Parents can help their child mount pictures or drawing of special events, their families, pets, etc, on the poster board to share with the class. I will send home a special sheet with more detailed information when your child is chosen.

"I LOST A TOOTH" STORIES
Children get really excited when they lose a tooth. When your child loses a tooth, I will send home a fun drawing/writing sheet. Parents can help write 1-2 sentences on "how" he/she lost their tooth and draw a picture of themselves. These pictures are hung up on a poster board to share with the class. At the end of the year, I will send your child's home in a little booklet.

LEARNING CENTERS
Two to three times a month I will have four learning centers the children can rotate through every 15 minutes. The learning centers will highlight centers out theme of the week. The centers will consist of fun activities writing, Art, phonics, cooking, counting, science, and math activities.

I will need two or three parents who are willing to help with these centers on Thursday mornings. The centers will be held every other week from 10:25-11:25 a.m. beginning in September.

SHARING TIME
Friday mornings we will have sharing time. Each week we focus on special themes such as birds, insects, Indians, ocean, etc. Activities within the classroom will reflect these themes. Please encourage children to only bring in share items that are theme related. No toys are allowed to be brought to school unless it is theme related (example: a toy dinosaur can be brought in during our study of dinosaurs). Books about our themes are always welcome throughout the week as we love to read!
