ACTIVITIES -We enjoy going on a number of field trips to places like the Tree House Museum, the Dinosaur Park, and Beus Pond. We also enjoy our annual Sock Drive in which we collect new socks for our friends at St. Anne's Center and the Ogden Rescue Mission.

BOOK REPORTS-We will do approximately 8 book reports this year. A book report form will go home with the Monday letter. Children can use books from any source. If your child makes more than 10 mistakes when reading the first page, the book is probably too difficult and an easier book should be chosen.

Welcome Second Grade Parents

As your child's teacher, I believe all children are a blessing from God, which makes them special creations. All children can learn and must not hinder the teaching or learning of others in the classroom. Together we will grow in the love and knowledge of our Lord, and Savior Jesus Christ!

SOMETHING ABOUT ME

I have been associated with St. Paul Lutheran School for twenty seven years, first as a parent and now as the second grade teacher. I received my degree from Weber State University. I love to sew and now I have five grandchildren to sew for.

CLASS RULES

In order for our class to run smoothly this year, I have established the following classroom rules:

  1. Give glory to God through our words and actions.
  2. Raise our hands and wait to be called upon.
  3. Listen carefully and follow directions.
  4. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  5. Work quietly. If you can be heard during quiet time, you are too loud. Speak softly.

Students who behave appropriately in the classroom and on the playground will be given positive rewards. The rewards might include verbal praise, notes or phone calls home, stickers, Dohle Dollars and whole class rewards.

DISCIPLINE

When inappropriate behavior occurs, warnings will be given to the students - non-verbal gestures and/or verbal instructions. After 2-3 warnings, the student will be asked to sign the notebook for the day. The reason for the behavior will also be noted. If the inappropriate behavior continues, the student will be asked to put a check mark next to his/her name. After two check marks, the teacher will send home a simple note explaining the situation. The note will require a parent signature and returned the next day. Dohle Dollars will be given to those students who do not have their names in the book at the end of the day.

GUIDELINES TO HOMEWORK AND STUDY:

  1. Give students a break after school. We all get tired out. Cookies & milk sound good!
  2. Set aside a specific time for homework and make the child's surroundings quiet. Also, set a time limit. 30 minutes, including 20 minutes of reading time, is a realistic goal.
  3. Break up the homework into sections and challenge your child to see how quickly he/she can do just one section, then the next, etc. Somehow it doesn't seem like such a big project that way.
  4. If your child becomes too frustrated, STOP and choose another time or even get up early in the morning. If you don't understand what to do, please give me a call at school. Doing homework and returning it the next day establishes a habit that will benefit your child for the rest of his/her life.

CONTACT ME - I am excited about our school year together. My classroom is always open to you. If you have any questions or concerns, stop by before or after school or call me. Remember all of the children and me in your prayers as I remember to pray for you. Thanks for you help and support!

NEWSLETTER - Each Monday I will send home a classroom newsletter to keep you informed of the happenings in the second grads. This letter also includes Spelling words and the memory verse. Corrected work will also come home in a home folder. The school newsletter (Paw Prints) is sent home on Thursday.

HOMEWORK - Your child will be responsible for all the work assigned during the school day. In addition your child should practice spelling words and memory verses every night. These will be tested on Friday of each week. Homework will be assigned nightly, with it due the next morning. Homework is as follows:

Monday - Spelling
Tuesday - Reading and Math page
Wednesday - Math
Thursday - Spelling

Children will take home Science and Social Studies books the night before a test.

PARENTS HELP-I always enjoy having parental help in the classroom. If you can help in any of the following ways, please let me know.

  1. Copying papers
  2. Correcting papers
  3. Recess or lunch duty
  4. Field trips
  5. Craft ideas
  6. Treasure store

READING BUDDIES - Each Friday your child will bring home a bag with books and a reading buddy to enjoy. These need to be returned by Wednesday of the following week.
